Join us for a fun and practical introduction to the colourful world of acrylic painting. If you have always wanted to learn how to paint, this is a great place to start.

In this one-day workshop, you will be introduced to the basics of acrylic painting. You will explore composition, colour and the use of acrylic mediums to better understand the techniques and possibilities of painting with acrylic. 

Whether you're an absolute beginner or have some experience already, you will gain confidence in your approach to painting with acrylics and inspiration to explore further, through individual attention from the tutor as well as plenty of hands-on exercises and practice.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this Acrylic Painting Workshop, you should be able to:

  • Understand the medium of acrylics
  • Practise colour mixing
  • Apply some new painting techniques

What will be covered in this Acrylic Painting Workshop?

  • Basic drawing
  • Basic colour theory and mixing
  • Tone
  • Composition

Students will produce two paintings – one from still life and one from photo/reproduction on canvas.

What we provide

  • A4 canvas paper
  • Still life setting
  • Acrylic paint mediums
  • Photographs

What to bring to class

  • A3 or A4 size cartridge paper for drawing warm-up (3 sheets)
  • One small canvas, approx. 20cm square
  • A variety of brushes
  • Graphite pencils
  • Disposable palette pad or a large white plastic or china plate
  • Fabric rag, approx. 20cm pieces
  • Acrylic paints in a variety of colours. We recommend Matisse Derivan Acrylics Intro or Primary Set or 40ml tubes of Primary Yellow, Cadmium Red Medium, Deep Rose Madder, Primary Blue, Titanium White.

Additional information

Please note the following: 

  • Closed-in shoes required
  • Please wear old clothes
  • Long hair should be tied back
