During this first home buyers course, the intention is that the following topics will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Due to the variable nature of Adult Education classes, parts of the curriculum may be adapted to suit the needs of the class.

• First homeowners grant and other duty exemptions and how to apply for them
• Understanding home loans - the requirements and how to get the best loan to suit your needs
• The deposit required for the purchase
• Complete costs of purchasing real estate including all the hidden extras
• Understanding how properties are valued and how the price is determined
• The buying process - private treaty, auction and buying 'off the plan'
• Negotiating with real estate agents and vendors and tips on getting the price you want
• Understanding the conveyancing process and the role of the solicitor
• Costly mistakes in buying real estate and what to look out for
• How to protect yourself in a rising or down market
• Your rights as the purchaser and how to protect yourself when making an offer or signing the contract for sale
• Discussion on the current market trend and outlook for the future
