Over three hours, you’ll learn how to perform safety checks, fix a flat tyre, adjust brakes, clean and lubricate a chain, and recognise when it’s time to seek professional help.
Held at Summer Hill workshop, this hands-on session blends practical learning with a community-focused environment, ideal for new or returning riders who want to feel safer, more independent, and more capable on the road.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this 3-hour workshop, participants should be able to:
- Perform an ABC Quick Check (Air, Brakes, Chain)
- Identify and fix common flat tyre issues
- Use tyre sealant effectively (optional hands-on)
- Adjust rim brakes for safer and more effective stopping
- Clean and lubricate a bike chain
- Recognise basic gear issues and understand when to seek further support
- Build confidence in practical bike care through guided practice

What will be covered in this Bicycle Maintenance Workshop?
Getting started
- Introductions (name, pronouns, cycling style)
- Safety briefing: tools, PPE, and workshop etiquette
Tools & techniques
- Understanding the ABC Quick Check
- Fixing common flat tyre problems
- Using sealant and tyre levers
- Basic brake adjustments (rim brakes)
- Chain cleaning and lubrication
- Recognising simple gear issues and what to do next
Expect a mix of demonstration and hands-on practice. Mistakes are part of the learning process, your facilitator will guide you throughout.
