This hands-on soldering and brazing workshop introduces the essential skills needed for electronics repair, circuit board assembly, wire repair, and small-scale metal joining. Designed for beginners, the course covers soldering fundamentals, safe handling of soldering irons, temperature control, flux application, and workshop safety practices including ventilation, PPE, and fire precautions. Participants will learn practical techniques used in DIY electronics, appliance repair, maker projects, and creative metalwork applications.

Through guided hands-on activities, participants will practice soldering wires, joining electronic components, and assembling a basic circuit board with resistors, LEDs, and connectors. The workshop also explores common soldering problems, desoldering techniques, continuity testing, and troubleshooting methods to help students build confidence in electronics repair and functional project work. By the end of the course, participants will have developed practical soldering skills and an understanding of tools and materials for future home projects and repairs.

Course content

During the workshop, participants will work with techniques and ideas such as:

Module 1: Welcome, Safety & Soldering Fundamentals

•  Safety briefing: ventilation, PPE, and fire precautions
• Overview of soldering: temperature, materials, uses
• Introduction to tools: soldering iron, flux, solder types

Module 2: Soldering for Electronics & Repairs

• Preparing surfaces and components (cleaning, tinning, flux)
• Hands-on: soldering wires and joining small components
• Learn to solder a basic circuit board: resistors, LEDs, connectors
• Common mistakes in PCB soldering and how to fix them

Module 3: Finishing & Functional Projects

• Desoldering techniques and fixing poor joints
• Cleaning and inspecting work (continuity testing, visual inspection)

All essential materials and tools are provided for this course, including copper and brass stock, solder, flux, circuit boards, and wire. You'll also have access to soldering irons, hand tools, torches, and safety gear to ensure a safe and practical learning experience.
