Smoking and Vaping Policy
Sydney Community College is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all students, staff, volunteers and visitors. Smoking and vaping are prohibited on all College premises.
Purpose
This policy has been established to:
Protect Health
To minimise adverse health effects from passive smoking and secondhand vapour exposure for all members of our community.
Meet Legal Obligations
To comply with the NSW Smoke-free Environment Act 2000 and the NSW Public Health (Tobacco) Act 2008, which prohibit smoking in enclosed public places, certain outdoor areas, and within 4 metres of a pedestrian entrance to a building. Under NSW law, e-cigarettes and vaping devices are subject to the same restrictions as tobacco products in smoke-free areas.
Meet Community Expectations
To reflect the expectations of our students, staff and the broader community that College premises are clean, safe and welcoming for everyone.
Vaping and E-Cigarettes
Under NSW guidelines, the use of e-cigarettes and vaping devices (including nicotine and non-nicotine vapes) is treated the same as smoking and is prohibited in all smoke-free areas. This includes all indoor spaces, outdoor areas within 4 metres of an entrance, and any other areas where smoking is banned under NSW law.
The use of vaping products is not permitted anywhere on Sydney Community College premises, regardless of nicotine content. This applies to students, staff, contractors and visitors.
