Impro Australia

Impro Australia

"Theatresports people are such finely trained improvisational athletes that no matter what you throw at them they just bat it back."

  • Tom Gleisner, Network 10's Thank God You're Here

Impro Australia  (IA) celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2025, starting life at The Belvoir St Theatre back in 1985! IA are the NSW licence holders for TheatreSports™, recognised as the original and most popular form of improvised comedy in Australia.

TheatreSports™-style games, challenge performers to create instant, spontaneous theatre, and are also the inspiration behind TV shows such as 10's Thank God You're Here, and Foxtel’s Whose Line is it Anyway?

Impro Australia is a not-for-profit, dedicated to exploring the craft of improvisational theatre, and bringing TheatreSports™ skills to the broader community - valuable life skills such as listening, acceptance, being in the moment, better communication, silencing your inner critics, building confidence, self-expression, tapping into your natural creativity & humour, and, of course, (re)discovering your playful self.

TheatreSports™ shows run throughout the year at venues such as The Factory Theatre, The Chippo Hotel, The Enmore Theatre, and more. IA’s fun-filled corporate workshops & performances bring playfulness, creativity & improved cooperation & collaboration to workplaces, while coaching the skills of listening, acceptance, positive interactions & teamwork. The TheatreSports™ In Schools, or TSC, program (school years 5-12) is the only one of its kind in Australia. IA runs courses and workshops across many age groups, starting from Primary school age right up to our adult courses in partnership with Sydney Community College.
