Sydney Community College Choir

What you'll learn

Join a choir and improve your singing skills with our music & singing short courses in Sydney!

The Sydney Community College Choir is a dynamic group of singers that has recently expanded due to local acclaim. If you want to join a choir in Sydney then this course is for you. If you haven’t sung in a choir before, we recommend you attend our Music Skills Essentials Course first, but this is not a requirement.

Led by director Christopher Bowen and supported by an accompanist, the choir has featured in two ‘Christmas at the Sydney Town Hall’ concerts, as well as a production of Handel’s ‘Messiah’ in conjunction with the Sydney University Graduate Choir.

Inexperienced students are invited to meet with Christopher 30 minutes before the start of the first session so he can get to know you and give any support needed as you settle in.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this choir course, you should be able to:

  • Sing choral music with confidence and contribute positively to the choir
  • Understand how to sing different musical styles in an expressive and meaningful way.

Course content

What will be covered in this choir?

For the ten sessions of the course, we'll spend nearly two hours per week learning great music from the last four centuries, from the madrigals of Dowland and the chorales of Bach to traditional and modern Christmas carols and 20th-century arrangements of national and folk tunes.

Although it would be an advantage to be able to read music or to have participated in a choir before, this is not essential as the emphasis will be on listening. The emphasis of the course will be on performing - we want to create a choir with a dynamic sound and a great repertoire that can get out there and convey the fun of choral singing to the public.

Intended audience

Who is this choir for?

This course is designed for everyone who loves to sing. Students with no experience are asked to attend 30 minutes before the first session.
