What you'll learn
Start your sewing journey with our sewing short courses in Sydney!
Sewing Essentials is the ideal starting point for anyone new to sewing or looking to refresh their skills. Whether you’ve never used a sewing machine or want to build confidence with the basics, this hands-on course offers a fun, practical introduction.
You'll learn to operate a sewing machine—including setup, troubleshooting, and stitch selection—while exploring essential techniques like seam and hem finishes, attaching pockets, and reading commercial patterns. You’ll also gain confidence in preparing and cutting fabric, including working with stretch, velvet, and directional prints.
To put your skills into practice, you’ll complete three beginner-friendly projects: a pincushion, a lined zippered pouch, and a pair of beautiful cotton pillowcases. Along the way, you'll develop good sewing habits and the confidence to continue sewing at home.
This course is both enjoyable and rewarding—and be warned: once you’ve made your first creation, you may just fall in love with sewing!

- Two reels of quality sewing thread in different colours (not white, cream or black)—brands such as Gutermann, Aurifil, or Mettler recommended
- One pack of 12mm bias binding in any colour
- One 8” (20cm) nylon dress zip (not metal or invisible)

- One pair of small thread snips or clippers

Sewing machine:
You’re welcome to bring your own machine (if portable), along with the manual and two bobbins specific to your model. Please do not bring your own machine if travelling by public transport.
Needles and bobbins:
- Machines on campus use standard domestic needles (look for 130/705 H on the pack). Size 80 or 90 is ideal for sew-all thread.
- Bobbins for College machines must be plastic, top-loading (drop-in). Look for packaging that specifies suitability for Singer or Janome drop-in machines. Avoid “universal” bobbins.

Yessica said: I enjoyed the most the fact that I got to learn a new skill, and the instructor was really helpful and patient which I believe made the process much better. Thank you so much!
-
Misha said: The tutor was warm, friendly and encouraging. My favourite part about the course was getting her best tips and tricks with sewing - the kind of things I wouldn't be able to learn online or with someone else. Thanks for helping me kickstart my new hobby (obsession...), I had a blast.

Anne said: Sylvia was an amazing teacher. She was very well prepared with lots of relevant handouts that we could refer to. She explained each of our tasks clearly and checked in with each of us to ensure that we understood what we were doing. Her experience in both sewing and teaching was evident and she was great in trouble shooting and in giving us helpful hints.
-
Katherine said: I had a great experience in this class. The tutor was knowledgable and friendly. Can't wait to keep sewing!
-
Lisa said: I enjoyed the course immensely. Ilona was very helpful and insightful in the use of the machine, different stitches, pattern cutting and sewing techniques. Our class had 7 - 8 people in each session and this was just right for everyone to get personalised attention and enable confident independent sewing by the end of the course. A larger class would diminish the learning opportunity.
