If you have done the Beginners Life Drawing Course or have experience in life drawing this short course is about taking your life drawing skills to the next level.
We will continue working with line, composition, tone, proportion, perspective, and form. However, you will also be introduced to new mediums and techniques. We will also do longer format drawings and include some props and fabric. You will walk away with a completed drawing of a model in situ.
This class is taught in a small class and relaxed environment. Your tutor will demonstrate techniques and give you individual tuition as well. At the end of the course, you will have gained more knowledge and confidence when approaching portraiture.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this life drawing course, you should be able to:
- continue working on basic skills of life drawing- line, composition, tone, perspective, and form
- understand new techniques and ways of seeing. We will introduce new drawing materials i.e., using ink and pastels. We will look at other artists and talk about their approaches
- look at different ways of creating tone and form through different techniques i.e. cross hatching, using ink and pastel to create these
- create a completed drawing of a figure in a space, using props considering the space they are seated in
- develop artistic practise through their figure drawing with longer poses

- Principles of drawing from life
- Draw with charcoal and pencil; faster drawing from different angles
- Use of tone to create volume
- See like an artist; learn from other artists and their approaches
- Structure and form; focusing on features and structures of the body and proportions
- Composing your drawing; looking at negative space and composition
- Expression and experimentation with media and techniques
- The figure in space and its surroundings
Intended audience
Who is this life drawing course for?
The class is aimed at people who have had some experience at life drawing either through Sydney Community College or have experience in life drawing.
The class is good for all ages, its relaxing but gives people a more of a challenge and introduces new techniques and approaches to drawing the human figure.
It’s good for people who want to work on drawings for longer than 30 mins to create a complete image of a figure in a context of a room with props. It takes the figure drawing to the next level.

Class materials
What to bring to class
Please purchase and bring to each class:
- Willow charcoal sticks x 2
- Pencil 2B & 6B
- Rubber, kneadable rubber
- Paper A3, regular weight 110gsm pad of paper 50 sheets
- 1 x A1 sheets of paper- better quality 210- 300 gsm for drawing or ink
- Small bottle of ink, drawing ink black small 50 ml's.
- 1 x Brush; size 16 or 14 synthetic round short handle easels and stools
If you buy it all from Art on King you will get a 10% discount. Just let them know you are a student at the Sydney Community College.
- If you cannot find all these don’t worry, we can work it out when you get to class, you can use printed newspaper to draw on too. If you have anything similar bring it to class and we can see what you have already.
Easels will be supplied.
