Learn basic woodworking skills with our woodwork short courses in Sydney!

Want to make your very own ramen dinner set? Over four weeks, this course will teach you how to make a variety of timber objects including two serving boards, a ramen spoon, a set of chopsticks and some chopstick and spoon rests using reclaimed timbers such as Coachwood and New Guinea Rosewood, reclaimed from locations throughout Sydney. 

In this Introduction to Woodwork course, you’ll learn how to finish your handmade items in a food-safe oil and wax finish so they can be used in your home, or to make the perfect gift.

While you’re making your ramen dinner set, you’ll learn how to safely use a variety of woodworking hand tools in the Among the Trees workshop to dimension, carve, cut and shape the timbers you’ll work with. 

This course is taught by our fantastic facilitator Steve Dawe, and includes use all materials, finishes, and tools in the course cost.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this Introduction to Woodwork: Ramen Dinner Set, you should have:

  • an understanding of how trees grow, how to identify timber growth patterns, grain and characteristics and how to work with these natural features in reclaimed timber
  • an understanding of how to dimension, carve, cut, shape and oil homewares objects and utensils for use in your home
  • an understanding of how to safely use a variety of basic hand tools

  • An introduction to workshop safety
  • An introduction to a variety of hand tools and how to use these safely and effectively - some of these tools are also covered individually in more detailed and dedicated courses run by Among the Trees
  • An introduction to understanding tree growth and how to identify this growth, grain and natural characteristics in the timber you’re using
  • An introduction to dimensioning, carving, cutting, shaping and oiling timber using hand tools to create a ramen dinner set

Who is this Introduction to Woodwork: Ramen Dinner Set course for?

Any learner who wishes to improve their personal and practical skills for self interest or the workplace.

Knowledge required

  • This workshop is aimed at people with no experience with woodwork. It is open to anyone 18 years and over.
  • The course is run using entirely hand tools so you need to be aware that there is an element of physicality involved.

Among The Trees accepts students under 18 in two groups:

  • Students 13-15 years of age must attend all courses with a parent or guardian. This parent or guardian must also purchase a place in the course and take part. One parent/guardian is able to attend with multiple students.
  • Students 16-17 years of age may attend a course without a parent or guardian present.

We encourage students to utilize the numerous public transport options nearby or ride their bicycle to Among the Trees, there is a bike rack on site. Street parking is limited during the day and onsite parking is off-limits for course participants during business hours (Wed-Sat 10am-4pm). Please contact Among the Trees directly if you have access concerns or requirements, there is an accessible parking spot available that we can reserve if requested. Outside business hours there are 3 onsite parking spots available.

Transportation and parking

  • Among The Trees is a 7 minute walk from Sydenham Station. There are bus stops for the lines 418, 423, 425, 426 and 430 all 4-6 minutes walk from ATT.
  • There are 3 onsite parking spaces available and street parking on Sydney Street and surrounding area.
  • If you are riding your bicycle, there is space inside ATT for you to store your bike.

Tools and Materials

What to bring

  • All you will need to bring is a pair of cut-resistant gloves such as these, which can be purchased from hardware stores like Bunnings for around $10. These gloves are purely a precautionary item of PPE and the course will teach you how to safely use all of the hand tools with no machinery or power tools involved.
  • You are encouraged to bring your own facemask, protective eyewear and ear protection however sanitised Personal Protective Equipment will be available to use. Any borrowed PPE needs to be sanitised after use. A face mask can be provided for each student when booking any course that includes sanding.
  • You are required to wear closed-toe shoes.
  • Please wear clothing that can get dirty (e.g. sawdust will be present).
  • Long hair needs to be tied back and no loose hanging jewellery should be worn.

Please note: This course may involve materials that are allergens for students. Nut and seed oils, as well as fine wood dust, may be present at points throughout the course. If you have any allergies please get in touch with us.

  • Concessions or discounts cannot be applied to classes hosted at the Among The Tree venue.

Lunch

For Classes running all day, a 30 minute lunch break will take place halfway through the class. Students are encouraged to bring their own lunch, alternatively there are Cafe's and take away restaurants nearby.
