What you'll learn
Step into Sydney’s hidden bushland corridors and harbour-edge ecosystems with environmental educator and conservation biology researcher, Sophia Platthy.
This course offers an immersive, field-based experience that invites you to slow down, observe closely and build confidence in natural environments within the urban landscape.
Guided by Sophia’s passion for local fauna ecology, including her studies in microbat behaviour, each walk weaves together ecological insight, mindful observation and practical bushwalking skills. You will learn to recognise relationships that shape local ecosystems, from the geology and landforms, the waterways and plant and animal communities. We’ll notice the birds, insects and evidence of animal life in the local habitat.
These sessions are designed to build safe walking practices, environmental awareness, and to support physical wellbeing and mental restoration. While walking together, we can enjoy time outdoors in a supportive group setting. Sophia’s calm, inclusive teaching style encourages curiosity, reflection, conversation and shared discovery. With attention to safety, group care and cultural respect for the Country on which we walk, this course offers an opportunity to reconnect with place, community and the often-overlooked “micro-worlds” that exist all around us.
The walking pace will be set to suit the needs of the group with breaks along the way to relax and enjoy the views. Participants are encouraged to bring large refillable water bottles and their own lunch and snacks. Sophia will provide some art materials and equipment for activities.
