This DSLR videography course provides you with the skills to master your camera for video and audio. We provide hands-on teaching from an industry professional in the basics of shooting, lighting & audio recording in a compact six weeknight DSLR videography course.

Course content

What will be covered in this DLSR videography course?

Week 1 - Introduction

  • Introduction to DSLR and mirrorless cameras
  • Camera file types, resolutions & frame rates
  • Understanding exposure: Shutter speed, ISO, aperture, white balance
  • Understanding lenses (primes vs zooms), focal lengths and depth of field

Week 2 - Camera Practices

  • Recommended camera practices/settings
  • Setting up your camera for video
  • Colour temperature
  • Understanding picture profiles

Week 3 - Practical 1: Outdoor Night Shoot

  • Camera movement and camera coverage - learn different methods of moving the camera, such as using a tripod and going handheld. Apply these skills to covering a scene, choosing the best type of shots to convey meaning and tell a story.

Week 4 - Practical 2: Interviews

  • Audio - an introduction to recording audio for your DSLR. You will be taken through recording into the camera as well as external audio recorders. In addition, different types of microphones will be explored from wireless lapel mics to shotgun mics.
  • Lighting - You will experience the difference between soft and hard light sources as well as the basics of 3 point lighting using LED light panels
  • Multi-camera shooting for interviews - how to set up and sync two cameras that can be edited together in post-production

Week 5 - Practical 3: Lighting Exercise

  • An introduction to product lighting - you will learn how to light for different objects and incorporate different camera movements and incorporate backgrounds into your work.

Week 6 - Practical 4 + Summary & Review

  • Shooting video and audio for Vox pops
  • Review of work
  • Summary of course
